Frothy Cappucino

This is a picture of a perfect frothy head on my cappucino compliments of Kim at Java Station in Bolivar Missouri. I love the frothy foam.  Yes it's just steamed milk, it's not sweet but it is so pleasing to me.

On my recent trip to Jackson Mississippi I ordered a Cappucino at two separate coffee bars......sadly both of them proudly served me a Latte....not cool and also very sad.

When I talk about Cappucinos I do not mean the sweet sticky stuff that come from machines at gas stations. They are fine but really they are more like a flavored Latte or fancy hot chocolate with coffee.  Not my cup of joe at all.  My favorite is a non~fat cappucino, medium dry with no flavoring. That makes me a happy girl.

So if you're in Bolivar come by Java Station. Kim and Lori know what they are doing.

Sweet Potato Tater Tots

Really?   What a great idea!  It's Sonic for dinner tonight and I think this is worth a blog entry.

The are slightly smaller than their russet counterpart. They have a similar texture to regular tots although slightly creamy. They taste fresh and a little bit sweet. Where's the marshmallow cream?   Yum!

Johnny G's Creole Kitchen

Taking a brief lunch stop at Johnny G's Creole Kitchen in Memphis on the way home from Jackson MS.  Strolling down Beale Street we were enticed to come inside by a sign that said Fried Strawberries and a friendly barker extolling the virtues of their cajun delicacies. Emily isn't very adventuresome as far as food goes but she was willing to risk it for the promise of Fried Strawberries and the fairly reliable fact that most places serve something chicken. The decor is definitely not polished or fancy which makes it a fun experience.  You walk right past the kitchen in this relatively long and narrow dining area.  Go on inside, sit anywhere you want and enjoy.

I had the Peppadew Brisket Po Boy. As brisket goes it was better than average. I still prefer my mom's. This one however was covered with Peppadew peppers. They are small round red and spicy sweet. Overall it was a good sandwich in a long crusty roll.

Emily had a bowl of Bourbon Street Chicken on rice. It was shredded chicken marinated in a Butter Hoisin sauce. The first thing you taste is sweet, then butter, then chicken. It was the better dish.  Obviously I didn't get the picture taken before she had half of it eaten.  I imagine we will be trying to recreate this dish at home.

For dessert we went for the Fried Strawberries. This dish was very delectable.  The mountain of fluff in the middle of the dish is whipped Cool Whip (They call is double whipped creme).  The strawberries are lightly battered and deep fried.  They taste like a strawberry pie does when you couldn't quite let cool before you tasted it.  The chocolate drizzle                                                                    was a great final touch.

Cabot Lodge at Millsaps Jackson Mississippi

We stayed at Cabot Lodge for Emily's campus visit of Belhaven. They have a special Belhaven rate which certainly makes it a reasonable place to stay considering it's proximity to Belhaven. We paid $89 a night plus tax. They have a great breakfast with eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles fruit danish etc. plus an afternoon happy hour with appetizers and drinks.

The parking lot is patrolled at night, the rooms are clean and tidy and service is nice.  I would definitely recommend staying here if you visit Jackson especially in the Belhaven area.

Five Guys

Keeping it simple for dinner. Five Guys Small Cheeseburger All the Way with mushrooms, grilled onions, pickles, lettuce, tomato, ketchup and mustard.  Very juicy, messy and very, very tasty.  This is a small one.  Don't think I'd ever be able to eat a regular size burger.

Dinner at Sal and Mookies

This is the Park Avenue from Sal and Mookies.  Fontina, Ricotta, Mozzarella with Pesto and Red Pepper Flakes. Crust is chewy, buttery and season with garlic. Yum!

Lunch at Alcenias Memphis TN.

Emily, Rebecca and I had brunch at Alcenia's a year ago. We were so impressed. It was our first Chicken and Waffles experience. Soooo good. This place is the place to go for Soul Food. BJ Chester-Tamayo is in the business of tending to customer's hungry stomachs with a heavy dose of Love. B.J. Comes out say hello to each customer with a hug and a kiss on the head. Loving on customers is the main motivation here. Ms. Tamayo suffered the loss of her only son in 1996. Alcenia's was opened in 1997 as a tribute to her mother who was a tremendous family cook, and also as a way to begin healing from the tragic death of her son.
If you are ever in Memphis you definitely should enjoy a meal here. Actually it's worth a special trip.

My choice today was Fried White Meat Chicken, Black Eyed Peas, Green Beans and Hot Water Cornbread. The coating on the chicken is super savory and crunchy. They cook your meat to order which leaves a few extra minutes to soak in the atmosphere. Every thing is served piping hot so you need to be a little patient. The side dishes are very well seasoned and the hot water cornbread is something I had never tasted til I visited Memphis. It's made with self rising cornmeal and boiling water (no eggs) fried in a skillet. Yum!

Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-ins and Dives was here

Bright colors and quirky designs abound here. I forgot to take a pic of the Ghetto aid....that's what it's called. It's a mix of three flavors of Koolaid and tons of sugar. Wow!

I bought a cookbook on this trip and BJ autographed it. It's full of historical and personal information (it was my blog reference).
